The Restoration Project
The aims of the Restoration Project were:
- to improve access
- to make best use of the lake
- to restore the Victorian buildings and water features
- to restore the exotic Victorian landscape
Improved access
- redesign, widening and replacement of the park entrance in
Pembury Road to improve access and safety
- redesign and resurfacing of car park at Pembury Road entrance
with marked bays
- renewal of the existing tarmac paths and a new, less formal
path, around the lake
- new entrance drive to relocated boat kiosk, thus reducing the
slope and improving access for everyone, particularly for
wheelchair users and visitors with pushchairs and young
children
- new, surfaced car park at the Halls Hole Road entrance and new
park gates
- Improved terracing and outdoor seating area at the café and
full disabled access, also interior and exterior refurbishment of
the building
- new benches, seats and bike racks new fencing and entrance
gates, where appropriate
Making best use of the lake
- removal of the existing boat kiosk and quayside and
constructing a new, attractive boat house and quayside
- restoration of lake edges and improving drainage
- installation of a new timber viewing platform between the lake
and the upper pond, providing long views down the lake
- new, attractive picnic area on the Halls Hole Road side of the
lake
- new, low-key boatstore
Restoring the Victorian buildings and water features
- restoration of the fountain and cascade to full working
order
- restoration of the Grecian Temple
- repair of the chalybeate spring
- restoration of the statue plinths
Restoring the exotic Victorian landscape
- reinstatement of the Marnock landscape of conifer-dominated
parkland and shrubberies
- restoration of the layout of the water gardens
- clearance of the cedar avenue and planting of new specimen
cedars
- restoration of the terrace as a focal point for visitors, with
colourful shrubs and bedding
- restoration and replanting of the rockery
