Farmers' Market National Awards' finalist

We are very pleased to announce that Tunbridge
Wells' Farmers’ Market has been selected as a finalist for the
Farmers’ Market of the Year Award, by the National Farmers’ Retail
and Markets’ Association (FARMA). We are one of just ten UK
finalists, and the winner will be announced on Tuesday 26 January
at Farm & More, the national farm retail conference.
The twice monthly farmers’ market celebrated
ten years of trading this year, and continues to thrive, attracting
customers of all ages. Run by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, the
farmers’ market provides a platform for new and developing
businesses, as well as local charities, community groups, the
library and ‘Freecyclers’, who can exchange goods there. Alongside
the well-established primary producers, market manager Barbara
Simmons is keen to support start up businesses. Producers are
encouraged to work together where possible, resulting in innovative
products like cherry brandy, apple granola, and traditional ethnic
meals, made using local ingredients.
Cllr Elizabeth Thomas, Portfolio Holder for
Planning and Economic Development, said:
'I am very pleased and proud that the Tunbridge Wells Farmers'
Market has been recognised for this award. It is an outstanding
example of local produce being valued and sought after, by local
people. Whatever the outcome I think it is a great
achievement.'
Sue Thomson, Quality Standards Manager at
FARMA, commented:
'Tunbridge Wells is an inspirational farmers’ market. Here is a
dedicated community of stallholders working together, constantly
reflecting on what they offer, and introducing new and exciting
foods. Already with an impressive ten years behind them, this
market is built with the future in mind.'
In the stages completed so far, the farmers’
market organisers have submitted an in-depth entry form, and been
visited by members of the awards’ panel. The judges will now look
at the individual cases in more detail to decide a national
winner.
